The Silver Fever
Prague may get most of the attention today, but during the Middle Ages, Kutná Hora was the city that helped pay for it. Driven by an insatiable demand for silver, this prosperous mining town became one of the wealthiest places in Europe and a pillar of the Bohemian Kingdom’s power.
At its peak, Kutná Hora produced roughly a third of all European silver and minted the famous Prague Groschen, a coin so trusted that it became the standard currency across much of Central Europe. While thousands of miners spent their lives deep underground, wealthy merchants and noble families transformed the town above into a rival worthy of competing with Prague itself.
On this private tour, we explore both sides of that story. We visit the haunting Sedlec Ossuary, admire the magnificent St. Barbara’s Cathedral, stroll through the medieval streets of the historic center, and discover how silver shaped the destiny of an entire kingdom.
Your Choice (Admission Included): Every traveler is different, so the afternoon is yours to shape. You may choose a guided visit to the Italian Court, the former royal palace and mint where the famous Prague Groschen was produced, or venture underground into the medieval silver mines with the Czech Museum of Silver. We take care of all reservations and entrance tickets.
Please note: The medieval mine tour takes place underground and includes narrow passages and stairways. Guests who are uncomfortable in confined spaces may prefer the Italian Court option.
To conclude the day, we’ll enjoy a relaxed glass of local wine in the historic vineyards beneath St. Barbara’s Cathedral. Every tour is fully customizable to suit your interests and pace.
